Nursery Music: Kohala, Deeper Blue

Even before Christian was born, Cindy and I already preferred having music playing in our house rather than having the television on (Hawks games, excluded). In fact, we’ve been bringing around our portable iPod speakers almost everywhere we travel, too. So, when it came to packing Cindy’s bag for Labor and Delivery and her recovery stay, we made sure we had them packed.

While in recovery, we had music playing almost the entire day, and all of the nurses would comment at one point or another on how relaxing and peaceful it was in our room. Indeed, it helped both baby and us having various soothing sounds in the air.

Kohala, Deeper BlueOne of albums that worked well for putting Christian down was “Deeper Blue” by Kohala. It was originally something we were planning to play during labor and delivery, too, but that didn’t exactly go according to plan now did it?.

We’ve been listening to Kohala for quite a few years now, starting back when we first visited Hawaii and Cindy’s aunt and uncle gave me a CD for my birthday. They also had a track on the Starbucks “Mele O Hawaii” CD, too, which is great. Friends of ours know that our son will most definitely grow up with a Hawaii influence in his life, so why not start in his first few days, eh? :)

More Music

Over the following weeks and months, I’ll likely share some of the other playlists that we have playing in the nursery (and it’s not all Hawaiian). Will be neat to come back to this in a few years (or a lot of years) and see how much of it he still likes.

Kind of a random post here, but I’m 32,000 feet in the air somewhere above Tennessee or something and listening to my iPod. The current playlist? DJ Shah Songbook.

So what, right? Sounds like a silly thing to post about, doesn’t it?

Actually, there’s a little more to it than that. This particular mix is one that Cindy and I have listened to in the car many times on our road trips up to Door County, WI. So much so, that everytime I listen to it, I can close my eyes and picture myself driving along Hwy 42 along side the water on the coast and cruising between Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, and all the others. Once I start thinking about Door County again, then in brings back all the memories we’ve had up there so far in our handful of visits.

All of that from just from listening to music that no one else on the planet would associate with Northern Wisconsin.

So, what Door County memories are coming up this time? Well, maybe it’s because I’ve been on a business trip all week and a little homesick, but mostly the memories of Cindy and I just driving around aimlessly and finding new places to check out.

Whitefish Dunes 002Take for example, the our December trip we tool in ’08 when we stayed in Sister Bay and it was like 4*F out during the day. When is wasn’t dumping snow on us, we drove around and found the Whitefish Dunes State Park and some of the hiking trails there. The sky was completely cloudless and gorgeous and the sun was beating down on our faces.

Cindy was bundled up with about a dozen layers and still freezing, but you couldn’t blame here. Even with the sun, it was still only in the single digits – not to mention the wind chill. All the snow there was mostly untouched because we were the first ones there that morning and perhaps one of only a few cars that paid a visit that day.

We did manage to make it down one of the shorter trails until we hit the snow covered beach with wave formations still frozen in the ice. Being a fan of winter, I was in polar bear heaven, although my loving wife would only humor me for a few minutes after that. So I snapped a few shots and we moved on.

More Door

EphraimI know, why the heck am I talking about snow and wind and wind chill when it’s only the middle of May. My bad.

One of the common themes that come up when I start thinking about our Door County trips is when are we going back. At this point, now that we expecting and have a few other items planned for the early summer, we don’t really have a next DC trip on the calendar yet. It also makes me think, “Boy, I really need a break from everything.” Nothing new there.

Every once and a while, I take it one step further and think to myself what it we every decided to move up that far north? I know our ultimate goal is to join our kimos over on the Valley Isle, buy with a little one coming, that makes the timing and planning a little more difficult. Plus, the cost of leaving is much cheaper that what we’re used to now in our current neighborhood, let alone Maui.

It’s a fun thought to entertain, if anything else. Could we survive the winters that are worse than what we already have now? What about not having Starbucks around? Which town would we choose? Do they have kick ass high speed Internet access? Okay, that last one was mine. ;)

All this from just sitting on a plane listening to a playlist on my iPod. Funny how my mins works, isn’t it.

Anybody else have similar experiences with certain songs or artists?

iTunes wants $120 from me

This popped on the iTunes Store under my account this week, and I got a chuckle out of it.

iTunes Plus Upgrade Offer

It has to do with upgrading my old iTunes purchases from the standard format to the iTunes Plus format, which doesn’t include DRM features.  It wasn’t so much that they made this offer (which I of course shot down), it was my chuckle at how much music, and money, I’ve actually purchased from iTunes in the passed year or so. Honestly, it was almost sort of depressing at the same time.
The Before
First, a little history before I go into the fact that I’ve purchased over 1,500 songs from iTunes (yikes!).  Like many people, my music interests have changed over the years, but as far back as junior high, I always remember being plugged into some form of walkman, CD player, etc.  Sparing all the long details, my most recent interests over the past few years have been various forms of electronic dance music, and mostly from overseas.
The Problem
The problem with liking this type of music is that there is so many categories out there, but so little selection around here in your mainstream stores.  I won’t even begin to try and describe some of the flavors of electronic music that are out there and the ones that I enjoy the most because it’s ultimately very subjective.  But back to the fact that I have had all sorts of trouble getting my hands on new music, which I’ve grown to accept.
Past Solutions
My solutions to this problem has been ever changing.  Gone were the days where Tower Records was still open in Schaumburg, where much to Cindy’s dismay, I could spend 30-60 minutes browsing through their selection of electronic music. It was by far the most expansive selection I was able to find in a store without leaving the country.
Next up, Amazon. This was back in the day before Amazon launched their own MP3 store, and where the majority of my now dusty CD collection originated from.  For awhile there, I was pretty addicted to Amazon, for everything from Music to techie stuff, to books, well, you get the idea.  Mostly, those days are behind me.
The CD game from Amazon started to dry up and having to fuss with CDs all the time was starting to get really old.  At this point, I still hadn’t bought an iPod yet.
So, in lieu of CDs, I went looking for music of the digital variety via the Internet.  I stumbled across Digitally Imported (di.fm), which was really an electronic music lover’s dream. I subscribed to them and for awhile, I was even (somewhat illegally, a gray area) recording some of their streams for my own private use. I ended up in the scenario which is the same reason we don’t have a DVR, I had too much music downloaded and no time to listen to it.
The iPod Cometh
I finally jumped on the iPod bandwagon a few years ago and picked up one.  They had already been very popular, and I went with the 30GB Video iPod. Thus began my history with iTunes and shopping for music online there.  Overall, I’d say it’s been the most successful solution I’ve come across for finding my types of music. For awhile there (back to the 1,500 song number), I was just as addicted, if not more, to buying music on iTunes than I was with ordering CDs from Amazon. Luckily, that has died down significantly in the past year.
Now, don’t rush to judgment yet (I’m sure it’s too late for that).  Many of my early purchases from iTunes was via the almight iTunes Gift Card, which became my most received gift for about 2 years.  That was the hook, though, that got me into the habit that started to take over.  I can’t say for certain how many of the 1,500 songs I’ve purchased from iTunes since March ’07 have been with gift cards or my own disposable income, but I’m not in any real hurry to find out. :)
One Minor Drawback
I did have one minor drawback with my iPod listening habit last year, and it was with the purchase of my new car.  You see, I had grown quite accustomed to the AUX input jack right on the front of my after market car stereo that went into my old Dodge.  But when it came time to take that car out and shoot it, I was amiss to realize that the stereo in my Pontiac G6 did not have such an option.  Bummer.  And trust me, I do NOT like those FM transmitters.
I have been eyeing the new iPods lately, with all their iPhone-like features and WiFi capabilities.  While the majority of my music resides on my PC and only the smaller selection make it to my iPod, I think being able to buy music right from my iPod would just as well do me in. :)
But it’s all about priorities, and since I’ve already seemed to have invested quite a bit of coin in new toys for our upcoming Maui trip, this one is going to have to wait.  My birthday is in April, however, so in case anyone is reading this (wink, wink) and is not sure what to buy me (wink, wink), this would probably be right up there on the list.
Oh, who am I kidding. Everyone stopped reading this after the iTunes graphic. :)

New Music This Weekend

Last month I mentioned the tunes we were listening to on our road trip up to Door County, and as sad as it sounds, I’ve had those same CDs in my disc changer for the last four weeks. Boy do I really miss having a car with an AUX input for my iPod.

While I haven’t bought CDs in what seems like forever, or at least since Tower Records closed, I did pick up a few at FYE at Woodfield this past Saturday. I recently have been just buying off the iTunes Store and burning to CD-Rs for the car, but we were there, so I decided to look.

Both of these are 2-Disc collections of Beach House music. Of course, we don’t have a beach house. And yes, we don’t even have a house (it’s a condo). But that’s just the name of this brand of music. If you’re interested in hearing what sounds like, buy me lunch and I’ll drive or just click on the links below.

By now you must be thinking I have a rather different taste in music that you’d imagine. At some point, I’ll get around to posting more details around who, what, etc.

Our Travel Music this Trip

Looks like Cindy’s got all the daily updates from our Door County trip pretty much covered, so I thought I’d write up a little something about the driving music that we’ve been listening to for the some 700+ miles in the car when the trip is all said and done.

This trip, I went with a collection of mixes from German DJ and producer Roger Shah, aka DJ Shah, aka Sunlounger. Here are the links to iTunes if you’d like to check any of them out for yourself.
You can read more about Roger Shah on his artists page at Armada Music‘s website.
These mixes are perhaps the best examples of a sub-genre of dance music known as Balearic Trance that I have been able to find to date. Inspired by the Balearic Islands and the dance party island of Ibiza, this sound has more of an island flavor, even something of a latin scheme at times, which continuing with up-beat tempos that keep your toes tapping and relaxes your soul no matter where you are. All this without putting you to sleep, which is a big help when driving. ;)

As for tunes outside of the car? Well, that’s Cindy’s area. She gets control of the iPod speakers with her Nano, which covers everything from Lifehouse and Rob Thomas to Nickelback and Scott Stapp. There’s also some Natasha Bedingfield, Pink, Jillian Huff, and countless others that I can’t even name. She knows them all, though, and since she doesn’t mind my driving music, her music at the lodge and at home is fine with me.
